Where Does Your Water Go?
On average, each person uses 60 gallons of water every day. You can reduce your water usage by as much as 30% if you are efficient!
- 28% flushed down the toilet
- 23% used for laundry
- 19% used for shower and baths
- 15% from all other faucets
- 12% unecessary leaks
- 3% dishwashing
- Test your toilet. Add several drops of food coloring to the toilet tank, if it's leaking, the color will appear in the toilet without flushing. Adjust the level of water in the tank by lowering the float even one inch.
- Try to wash only full loads of laundry and match your washers load selector with the load size.
- Install a low flow shower head. A typical 5 minute shower uses around 20 gallons of water were a tub full of water is close to 50 gallons. To compare this, plug the drain when you take a shower and see how high the water level is when you are done.
- Don't let the water run while you are brushing your teeth or shaving. Turn the faucet on briefly to rinse.
- Keep any eye out for leaky toilets, drippy faucets, and hose bibs. A leaky toilet can increase your bill by $5.00 a day and the parts to replace them probably is under $20.00.
